Pussy Riot members to speak at Roskilde as festival donates €40,000 to charity

Roskilde-RESIZED
DENMARK Two formerly imprisoned members of the Russian activist group Pussy Riot will visit this year’s Roskilde Festival and give a speech to the guests.

The Roskilde Festival Charity Society is donating €40,000 to the two Russian activists’ newly-formed NGO called Zona Prava (Zone of Rights). The organisation aims to monitor Russian prison conditions and human rights.

Nadya Tolokonnikova and Masha Alyokhina, will deliver a talk on their political cause and activist work to the festival-goers at the non-profit music festival on July 5 at 5.30pm.

Roskilde Festival’s spokeswoman Christina Bilde says: “Roskilde Festival is non-profit, and we have a decade-long tradition of focusing on human rights. So it is natural that the festival supports the two activists and their work with a donation.

“We’re also happy that Nadya and Masha from Pussy Riot have chosen to accept our invitation and visit Roskilde Festival. They have gained some personal experiences in being deprived of their artistic freedom and civil rights. This is something that can be hard to understand in a safe society like Denmark, and it gives us all the more reason to draw attention to the seriousness of the situation outside our national borders.”

In connection with the visit to Roskilde Festival, Nadya Tolokonnikova and Masha Alyokhina also visit Danish prisons and meet with Danish human rights organizations and politicians.
