The Association of Independent Festivals has calculated that 72 UK festivals have now announced a postponement, cancellation or complete closure in 2024 – double the amount that fell in 2023. 31-year-old Tenterden Folk Festival is among the most recent closures, with rising costs among the reasons given for the decision. With the above figures in mind, plus 96 events lost to Covid, the total number of UK festivals to have disappeared since 2019 is now 204. The European Festival Association YOUROPE and Karlsruhe Marketing und Event GmbH (KME) drew a positive conclusion after the first European Festival Summit in Karlsruhe. Around 200 participants came to Tollhaus to discuss how they can make festivals fit for the future.
